As the most wonderful time of year approaches, cities all over the world are putting up trees and lighting their buildings to provide holiday cheer to their citizens and visitors. New York City is known for being one of the magical places to be during the Holidays. This year Governor Hochul revealed the new light display in Empire State Plaza to be all LED lighting. The new lighting project includes the Holiday tree and exterior lighting in the plaza.
This is part of the Governor’s plan to make New York more energy efficient. The New York Power Authority (NYPA) and New York State Office of General Services (OGS) is working on this assignment together to make the Empire State Plaza lighting energy efficient by switching to LED lighting inside and outside the buildings. The Holiday display is part of a $16 million project that is scheduled to be completed by 2023.
The project started in 2019 when the NYPA and OGS began investigating technical issues and listening to the community about the lighting needs of the plaza. This began their upgrade to LED lighting and improving their commitment to their climate change plan to make New York more energy efficient.
“The tree lighting and the larger completed lighting project are symbols of hope and optimism after a rough year and a half, and reflect our state’s commitment to a greener, more efficient future,” said Governor Hochul
